Just watch the film right? Wrong, very wrong. Now I understand that many people like to state they aren’t particularly the ‘reading type’ however, reading is often described as an ‘escape from reality’ where you can control your imagination to reach limits far beyond your capability.
I also understand that films can be memorable and adaptations can be very good, although the line between horrible disaster and amazing masterpiece is surprisingly thin and worryingly it can go unnoticed. However perceptions differ between different people; another mans’ trash is another mans’ treasure so.
Books can also convey a whole other side to what the film adaptation carried. There can be much missed out action, humour, characters and more. And it’s a director’s job to make sure that they include what they feel is most valuable and important. Despite that many fans or fandoms of books tend to disagree with various choices these directors and producers have made to make a film out of a book. But the truth is if someone was to make a book that was pretty much an exact copy of the book; the film would probably be about ten hours and who wants to sit through a film that long? Not many people I can guarantee you.
Nonetheless, people have to give credit to these producers and directors who make films and screenplays out of novels and books, because some of them are deservingly bowed down to, in one way or another. I mean it wouldn’t be an easy job, as many people who became lovers of these pages and pages of story who also anticipate the newly made film put a lot of pressure on people’s shoulders. It’s a lot of stuff to take on.
But just be careful the next time you say ‘I’ll just watch the film’ because my friend you could be making a massive mistake as you take a dip into the lazy way of human society. Books are magic and everyone deserves to have at least a taste of what they can do to you. So go read the book. Or at least the blurb.
