Huskies first originated from the Siberia, they were developed to fulfil a particular desire, need and culture of the Chukchi and related peoples of Chukchi. As it is one of the most inhospitable climates in the world, the temperatures plummeting to around -1000F C in winter and winds usually reaching 100 mph, the Chukchi rely on there on their Huskies for survival, as they were a remarkable tool of ingenuity.
With teams as large as twenty or larger they are able to travel over large amounts of ice, sometimes over as much as 100 miles in 24 hours only to allow a single man to ice-fish and return with their catch by sled dogs. The economy and religious life was centred on the Huskies in Chukchi. The best dogs were owned by the richest members in the community- this is the reason why they were the richest in the community.
Many of the religious ceremony’s were based around the huskies and people also believed that there were two huskies who guarded the gates of heaven, turning away anyone who had shown cruelty to a dog in their lifetime. When winter came, the Huskies were tied up when they were not working. However, the unneutered dogs were allowed to roam around and breed at their own will. When summer came all of the huskies were set free and allowed to hunt in pact- only to return when the snow returned and the food grew scarce.
